Puppy in the window: The animal adoption process is not simply stopping by and picking up a pet. Read the article to find out more.

When it comes to adopting a shelter dog or cat, one of the most common misconceptions people have is that they can simply stop by, pick one out and take them home. Not everyone realizes there is an application involved and every clause in the adoption process is there to help ensure every animal is cared for, safe and will never end up in a shelter again.

All applicants must be 18 years of age and have the consent of all adults living in the household. If living in a rental, you will be required to provide your landlord’s name and phone number or a lease that consents to have pets on the property. You must also provide verification that previous animals in your care have been vetted and all current dogs and cats in the home are up-to-date on vaccinations.

We strongly encourage anyone that is considering adoption to fill out an application. Once your application is approved, it remains in good standing for up to one year so when the perfect pet is available, it will increase your chances of getting them and greatly expedite the adoption process, often allowing you to take them home the same day!

We also get questions about our adoption fees and why they vary. The price of dogs and puppies ranges between $125 and $350.  Cats and kittens range between $50 and $80, with the price of each animal listed alongside their bio on our website,  www.humanesocietyotc.org.

The adoption fee depends on various factors including animal type, breed, age, size and demand. Puppies, kittens, small dogs and specific breeds are in higher demand than others and often spend less time in the shelter. Charging higher prices for certain pets helps us care for those that stay at the shelter for longer periods of time. It also provides flexibility for staff to reduce or eliminate adoption fees for animals with special needs, medications or diets. All adoption fees include age appropriate vaccinations, microchip implants and spay/neuter (see more specific details on this on our website).

It is also important to note that adoption fees collected at the shelter only cover a small portion of the overall care of our animals. The HSOTC is an independent, 501c3, not affiliated with any national organization or government entity. We operate with donations from people like you and welcome you to stop by the shelter anytime with your questions. We work hard for the animals and have a passion for operating a shelter Otter Tail County can be proud of. Come visit!
